We have chosen Kristen Moody as our member of the month because of her care and concern for others.
Hello,
My name is Kristen Moody, and I am currently a resident of Fluvanna Correctional Center for Women. I have been residing here for the last four years. Prior to residing here, I was spending time in Prince William County Regional Adult Detention Center. Where I was sentenced to 30 years. Though I have submitted a request for a commutation, and I am awaiting to look into that new law about the indictments to see if I possibly qualify. I am excited to read that you all have expanded into the northern Virginia area or as we call it NOVA. I am originally from Manassas. I have told my family members about the event that is happening this coming Saturday and they said that they would try to make it as a couple of them had prior commitments. I know it would be great for my daughter to experience but unfortunately, we aren't allowed to have contact and her dad won't always answer the phone when I call.
I am excited that you all are getting involved in that area because a lot of people aren't really aware of how the justice system works or how they can help get involved to help make a difference. I won't lie and say that I was one of those people who were sheltered about anything involving jail/prison. In fact I was taught in a way to look down on people who were "shady" situations or "unsavory" pasts. However, now that I am one of those "looked down" on people I want to help educate people about how they can help, help give them more resources, and of course support whether it be from behind these walls to start and of course once I am released and back in that area. It's hard to make a change or fix something you aren't aware of and I want to help be that person that brings that awareness and information to help those still incarcerated who don't know how or where to begin to fight for what they deserve or have been stuck in the mindset that they won't get the chance to get out and also those struggling on the outside who believe they can only survive and function in jail and prison.
Well thanks for reading a little about me. And I can't wait to read about how the Manassas family event went in the next newsletter. Thank you for working for us and with us and reigniting that hope for so many.
Blessings,
Kristen Moody
